DEANERY RECONCILIATION SERVICE
The last in our series of Deanery “stations” through Lent takes places this coming Tuesday 19th March at Saint Joseph’s Church, Mary Street, Heywood, OL10 1EG. It is a “Reconciliation Service”, led by our Bishop John, at which individual confessions will be available courtesy of our Deanery priests: after an introduction and scripture passage, the Bishop will lead us in reflection and examination of conscience, after which priests will be available in Church for individual confession and absolution. At the end we will gather again for thanksgiving for forgiveness. This is an ideal opportunity to go to confession before Easter, in a safe and encouraging environment, with the option of celebrating with a priest other than your own parish priest! Everyone is very welcome.

MASS INTENTIONS

Please be aware that the names of the sick or housebound cannot be included in the parish newsletter (unless we have the express consent of the sick or housebound person) as the bulletin is posted on the parish website – therefore making that information available to the public at large. It is often the case that families contact the parish office and politely request that the privacy of the sick or housebound person is respected.

THIS WEEK’S GOSPEL

Today’s moving gospel reading is the immediate prelude to the account of the Last Supper and the Passion. In it we witness how Jesus’ dread (his soul is ‘troubled’) is mixed with confidence at what he knows is approaching. In the gospel of John there is no agony in the garden before Jesus’ arrest, for in John the story of the Passion is so shaped that it is clearly understood as the triumph of the Son of Man. There is no mention of humiliation or mockery. Jesus remains in control from the beginning (when he permits the guards to take him into custody) until the end (when he calls out that he is ready to die: ‘It is complete’). This is all about the hour of the exaltation of the Son of Man, when Jesus is raised up in every sense. All the more important, then, for John to show that, before the Passion, the cost for Jesus was real. He does this with this little dialogue in prayer between Jesus and his Father. This is John’s equivalent to the prayer in the garden. The second reading from Hebrews is another variant on Jesus’ prayer before his Passion. All these prayers express Jesus’ very human fear, his unshakable commitment to his task and his loving confidence in his Father’s care. Does Jesus fear death? Do you? What are the grounds for Jesus’ confidence? Do you share this confidence

BAPTISMS Please see Fr. Brady after Mass if you would like your child to be baptised. A baptismal certificate for one of the parents must be provided as evidence of baptism in a Roman Catholic Church before a baptism date can be given. We welcome parents and children and by attending Masses at the weekend on Saturday at 5.30pm, Sunday at 9.00am or 10.00am which fulfil the Sunday obligation. All Catholics are OBLIGED to celebrate Mass on EVERY Sunday.

BAPTISM CERTIFICATE COPIES REQUESTS For those requesting copies of baptism certificate the office can be contacted initially and the certificate can be collected at any of the weekend Masses. This is also to encourage people to come to Mass.

SICK AND HOUSEBOUND If you know of anybody who would like Fr Brady to visit, could you please give him their name and address with postcode and a contact telephone number. Thank you.

MASS INTENTIONS AND NEWSLETTER INCLUSIONS The practice of requesting a Mass to be offered for loved ones, living or deceased, is a beautiful and wonderful part of our Catholic Tradition. Continuing this long-standing practice, you can remember someone who has died recently or many years ago. The Mass can also make beautiful gifts for any special occasion: birthdays, anniversaries, in thanksgiving for a prayer answered etc. You can offer an intention for anybody who is struggling with a serious illness or other difficulties of life. Please hand in any Mass Intentions and items for the bulletin before Thursday as the newsletter is printed on Friday Morning. There are Mass Intention Envelopes provided on the table in the Atrium. Please provide a contact number with Mass Intentions so that any discrepancies can be resolved. Thank you.

OUR LADY’S LAMP AND THE SANCTUARY LAMP These burn for seven days. Please place any intentions in an envelope with £5 in the Mass Offerings Box in the Atrium.
