CHRISTMAS COLLECTION

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed so generously to our Christmas collection. We are delighted to share that the total raised was £1,693.20. Your kindness and support are a true reflection of the spirit of Christmas and will greatly help the life and mission of our parish.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

At the start of this New Year, we place ourselves once again in God’s loving hands. May the Lord bless you with health, peace and the grace to grow closer to Him each day. Let us walk together in faith throughout the year ahead. Happy New Year and God bless you. Fr. Brady.

UCM

The next UCM meeting will take place on Wednesday, 7th January at 2.00 pm.

CHRISTMAS TREE RECYCLING

Our Laudato Si’ Centre is once again joining forces with a Christmas Tree recycling project in a bid to care for community and common home. The project raises funds for local charities by collecting used Christmas Trees, while chippings from the trees will be repurposed across the Laudato Si’ Centre: Find out more >

FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY

The Feast of the Epiphany celebrates the moment when Christ is revealed to the world. Guided by the star, the Magi set out in faith, and in the Christ Child they discovered a light meant for all nations. Epiphany reminds us that we too are called to seek the Lord, to recognise his presence in our lives, and to reflect his light through our words and actions. May this feast strengthen our faith and renew our desire to follow Christ with trust and generosity.

RELICS OF ST. CARLO ACUTIS TO VISIT DIOCESE OF SALFORD

In January, the relics of St. Carlo Acutis will be hosted at two of our churches over five days.

Carlo is the first millennial saint and is celebrated for his profound faith and his use of the internet to log Eucharistic miracles from around the world.

He was passionate about spreading the teachings of the Catholic Church up until his death from leukaemia at the age of 15.

The relics will be presented at St. Mary’s Church, Burnley, from 28th to 29th January, before they travel to St. Patrick’s Church, Collyhurst, from 30th January to 1st February 2026.

More information will be shared soon with parishes and on the Diocesan website and social media channels.

MASS FOR ENGAGED COUPLES TO BE CELEBRATED BY BISHOP JOHN ARNOLD

On Saturday 14th February, Bishop John will be celebrating a Special Mass for engaged couples across the diocese.

The Mass provides couples with an opportunity to seek God’s blessing to guide them during this time of preparation.

Newly-married couples are also invited to receive a blessing in their first year of marriage.

The Mass will take place at St. Patrick’s Church in Collyhurst at 1.30pm.

HOLY FATHER’S INTENTION FOR JANUARY

Let us pray that praying with the Word of God be nourishment for our lives and a source of hope in our communities, helping us build a more fraternal and missionary Church.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

‘They saw the child with Mary his mother, and they knelt down and paid him homage.’ Matthew 2:11

STAY WITH US, LORD, ON OUR JOURNEY

THIS WEEK’S GOSPEL

The Gospel reading for this Second Sunday after Christmas is the same as that for Christmas Day itself.

Perhaps, after all the celebrations of Christmas, there is room for a more sober thought.

The climax is not at the end of the reading, but is in the centre: ‘to those who believe he gave power to become sons of God’.

On either side of this verse are rejection by his own people, and acceptance by those who see his Glory.

This theme of acceptance and rejection runs right through the gospel of John, some accepting (the disciples, Nicodemus, the Man Born Blind), some rejecting (the Pharisees, the leaders of the Jews).

The disciples accept at the Marriage Feast at Cana; the leaders of the Jews immediately afterwards reject at the Cleansing of the Temple.

You cannot remain neutral; you must either accept or reject.

It is a great trial-scene, and we judge ourselves by our reaction to Jesus.

The Father has given all judgment to the Son, but the Son judges no one.

The last dread scene is when the Jewish leaders pass sentence on themselves before Pilate and before Jesus crowned as king and seated as judge; they reject God’s kingship by saying, ‘We have no king but Caesar’.

There is no need for sentence to be passed, for we pass our own sentence on ourselves.

BAPTISMS Please see Fr. Brady after Mass if you would like your child to be baptised. A baptismal certificate for one of the parents must be provided as evidence of baptism in a Roman Catholic Church before a baptism date can be given. We welcome parents and children and by attending Masses at the weekend on Saturday at 5.30pm, Sunday at 9.00am or 10.00am which fulfil the Sunday obligation. All Catholics are OBLIGED to celebrate Mass on EVERY Sunday.

BAPTISM CERTIFICATE COPIES REQUESTS For those requesting copies of baptism certificate the office can be contacted initially and the certificate can be collected at any of the weekend Masses. This is also to encourage people to come to Mass.

SICK AND HOUSEBOUND If you know of anybody who would like Fr Brady to visit, could you please give him their name and address with postcode and a contact telephone number. Thank you.

MASS INTENTIONS, OUR LADY’S LAMP AND THE SANCTUARY LAMP  The practice of requesting a Mass to be offered for loved ones, living or deceased, is a beautiful and wonderful part of our Catholic Tradition. Continuing this long-standing practice, you can remember someone who has died recently or many years ago. The Mass can also make beautiful gifts for any special occasion: birthdays, anniversaries, in thanksgiving for a prayer answered etc. You can offer an intention for anybody who is struggling with a serious illness or other difficulties of life. There are Mass Intention Envelopes provided on the table in the Atrium. (Please ensure that you have the express consent of the sick or housebound person as the bulletin is posted on the parish website, therefore making that information available to the public at large. Please provide a contact number with Mass Intentions so that any discrepancies can be resolved. Our Lady’s Lamp and Sanctuary Lamp are £5.00 and burn for seven days. Please place any intentions in an envelope with your donation and give to Father Brady or place in the Mass offering Box in the Atrium. All newsletter items must be sent in by Thursday morning.
